One of the many things Eckerd College offers to its students is a stellar Career Services Department.  From resume workshops to “speed interviewing”,  Eckerd’s career services department works directly with their students to make sure they get the most out of their degree.

I recently interviewed the department’s Executive Director, Jessica Neander to get her take on how the department works.  She told me about a wide variety of career oriented events ranging from the “Regional Career Fair, an H1B Visa conversations with a local lawyer, two resume workshops (intro and advanced), Grad school info sessions, Women’s Leadership Panel… [and] mock interview speed dating” just to name a few. She also informed me that these kinds of events vary during the semesters and the website is the best avenue for keeping up to date.

When asked about the main goal of her department, Neander responded, “Our main goal is to provide students guidance on how to marry their interests/passions with a career path and how to market themselved in the best way possible”. She also stressed the importance of staying current and making sure the students’ feedback is taken seriously and implemented when possible.

Finally, I asked Jessica Neander what general help she could offer to a student looking to jump into the job market.  She advises, “The first step is always to review and/or draft a resume. Without a resume,  it’s impossible to apply for a job. After the resume is finalized, we’ll talk about interests/priorities, and potential career paths that will fit with those interests/priorities…”

Not only does Eckerd’s Career Services Deptartment offer these services to students seeking jobs, but it also send out weekly internship and job blasts and also reach out to businesses they have a good relationship with if they have a student that will fit the company’s needs. Eckerd definitely has one superior system for getting its students employed.
