HQ Trivia: Popular Game Finds Ways to Avoid Awarding Prizes

By Lawrence Lease on January 29, 2018

Many have tried and failed and few have won the popular HQ Trivia game. The app-based game show has gone viral since its debut in October 2017. It’s tough to conquer, not only because the questions get harder as you progress, but as the app continues to rise in popularity, glitches cause people to not be able to answer questions correctly before the 10 seconds are up.

These glitches often benefit the few who manage to stay connected and answer all 12 questions correctly. However, even if you win a slice of the day’s jackpot, there’s a catch. Most people who win HQ Trivia never get to collect their cash. Even the woman who won $11 via the app whose reaction went viral.

If you look at the fine print of HQ Trivia and their Terms of Service, most winners of HQ Trivia will get stuck and prevented from being able to cash out their winnings. HQ Trivia has managed to find several major loopholes to avoid paying out winners. First, HQ Trivia will not cash you out unless you win at least $20. While the jackpot continues to rise higher and higher, the number of participants continues to grow, which means the amount split by the winners ends up being less than $20. Because of this, if you want to take home your winnings, you will have to play again and win again, until your overall winnings are over the $20 threshold.

That’s a major obstacle to overcome and an extremely difficult task. However, there’s another loophole that HQ Trivia uses. Players have only 90 days to go over the $20 threshold to collect their winnings. After that, HQ Trivia’s terms of services says HQ Trivia can decline to award you your winnings: “A Contest winner’s failure to cash-out the Prize within the specified 90 days will be considered such Contest winner’s forfeiture of the Prize and Sponsor may, at its option and sole discretion, choose not to award the Prize at all.”

Because of the difficulty of HQ Trivia, the odds appear to be stacked against you, even if you play twice a day. This means HQ Trivia is probably keeping more money than what is given out to the winners. Few people have made this realization. It also appears that people are happy to play through the shady business and glitches in order to have a shot at winning some money.

After all, game shows and trivia nights and games have always been popular, even for the losers. Most players do it to show off their intellect and see how far they can make it.
