The Benefits of Amazon's Prime Student Membership

By Madison White on August 27, 2019

You may have heard of Amazon and Amazon Prime before, but did you know that they have a special service just for students? Prime Student offers many of the same benefits that regular Amazon Prime has at a much lower cost. In fact, the first six months of your Prime Student membership are free! After the six month trial, a membership to Prime Student is still a reasonable cost considering that it is half of the regular fee. Students can expect to pay $6.49 per month or $59 per year after the free trial ends. As long as you are enrolled at a two or four-year college, you are eligible for a Prime Student membership.

In this press release, Prime Student touts many services that directly benefit college students. One of the major perks is that Prime Student allows for free and fast delivery options on millions of products. This is especially important for students who want to buy their textbooks online and need them to arrive quickly. Amazon can be also very helpful in saving money on textbooks because there are often cheaper, used options available as well. Amazon also has options to rent textbooks if students would rather not buy them. Of course, free and fast delivery can be used on many items beyond just textbooks.

Another area students may be interested in is Amazon’s Off-to-College Store. This is a section of the website where students can go to find everything they might need for college. They carry everything from electronics to duvets to picture frames.

Amazon’s Prime Student membership can also help students fill their downtime between classes. Just as with a regular membership, students have access to Prime Video which carries an enormous amount of entertainment options from TV shows to movies.

If movies and TV shows aren’t your thing, students can also get exclusive benefits from the gaming streaming service Twitch. The membership touts “in-game loot for some of the world’s most popular games, free games each month, a monthly Twitch channel subscription, and more.”

Another feature of the membership that Amazon is advertising is their $0.99 monthly subscription to Amazon Music. Much like other music-streaming services like Spotify or Apple Music, Amazon Music offers over 50 million songs ad-free. For comparison, the monthly subscription to Amazon Music for a regular Prime member is $7.99 per month. If you are looking for a streaming service, this option could be much cheaper than other options. It also works on iOs, Android, and Alexa-enabled devices.

Overall, Amazon’s Prime Student membership offers a variety of benefits to college students. Firstly, it allows for a six-month free trial so you can decide if it is worth spending money on in the future. It appears to be wonderful for buying and shipping textbooks, and allows for multiple entertainment options when you aren’t studying.
